Josef Goebbels's Rules of Propaganda

In Nazi Germany, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels's official title was "Minister of Public Enlightenment." It is a fascist weapon of mass destruction.

  • Simplification and the single enemy: adopt a single idea, a single symbol. Make all adversity the responsibility of a single entity.














     

  • Method of Contagion: join diverse enemies into a single category or individual. Adversaries must constitute a single entity.













     

  • Transposition: project your own mistakes and shortcomings onto the adversary, answer attack with attack.














     

  • Exaggerate and misrepresent: turn any anecdote, no matter how small, into a grave threat.














     

  • Vulgarize: all propaganda must have popular appeal; adapt it to suit the least intelligent people targeted. The larger the group that needs convincing, the smaller the mental effort required to understand what the message should be.














     

  • Orchestration: propaganda should limit itself to a small number of ideas that are repeated endlessly, presented again and again from different perspectives, but always converging on the same concept. There should be no cracks in the argument, no doubts.














     

  • Renovation: one must issue new information and arguments at such a pace that, by the time the adversary can respond, the public is already interested in something else. The adversary's responses must never be allowed to cancel out the accusations.














     

  • Credibility: build arguments from varied sources and through fragmented information.















     

  • Silencing: keep quiet on matters for which you have no answers and hide news that favors the adversary, while employing counter-programming with the help of the media.
















     

  • Transfusion: as a general rule, propaganda operates from a pre-existing sentiment, whether a national mythology or a blend of traditional hatreds and prejudices.















     

  • Unanimity: manage to convince the many that they think 'like everyone else', creating an impression of unity.
